Leonotis nepetifolia 'Staircase' / Leonotis hort. / Lion's Ear / Seeds

This horticultural variety of Lion’s Ear is a fast growing shrub, with bright orange red whorls of flowers in ‘steps’ along tall stems.   Plants grow to an impressive 1.5m and add strong colour to the border later in the season, from August into late autumn.  These plants differ from the wild Lion’s Ear, with rounder leaves and taller flower stalks.

These are great garden plants that can be grown as annuals from spring sowings or kept in pots in a greenhouse over winter and grown as perennials.  They need little care and attention and provide excellent late summer colour.

Plants grow best in full sun to part shade and composted well-drained soils.

Pack of 20 seeds.
Sow anytime, typically spring to autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Half hardy herbaceous shrub, which can be grown as an annual
Flowers August to November
Height 1.5m
Spread 60 - 80cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and composted well drained soil
Sow Sow in a tray of seed compost, keep at 20°C and germination takes 2-4 weeks, but can be erratic and take up to several months.  Transplant seedlings into small pots when they are big enough to handle and then out into the garden after the last frost.
Grow Plants grow quickly, particularly from spring sowings.  Keep plants well watered during summer.  After flowering, either remove the plants in autumn if growing as an annual or cut back hard in winter and protect from frost and excessive winter wet. Plants can be grown in pots and brought into a greenhouse in winter.  Protect against red spider mites under glass.  Mature plants can be divided in spring and stem cuttings can be taken in spring and summer.
