Malva sylvestris 'Mystic Merlin' / Tree Mallow / Seeds

A lovely shrub for the back of the border, with silky flowers in shades of rich purple to mauve to blue in summer from June to September.  Plants grow to a manageable height of 150-180cm, and grow well in not-too-rich soil. They attract pollinators and make good cut flowers.

Malva ‘Mystic Merlin’ prefers sun to full shade, well drained soil and some protection of wind.

Pack of 40 seeds.  Sow spring to summer in a tray of seed compost.  Early sowings flower in the first year.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy perennial
Flowers June/July to September
Height 150 - 180cm
Spread 60cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and well drained soil
Sow

Sow in late winter to summer about 2mm deep in trays of seed compost.  Keep at 21°C and germination takes 2-3 weeks.   Pot on seedlings when they are big enough to handle and plant out in the garden when frost free.  Early sowings flower in the first year.  Plant out in a sunny or semi-shaded area in not-too-rich soil.

Grow Plants need little maintenance once established. They flower prolifically in the right conditions.  Cut back flowering stalks after they have died to stimulate more flowers. In spring, tidy up any remaining unruly/dead material.  Mulch the base of the plants in colder gardens to protect them against hard frosts. Plants self-seed, so they reproduce themselves over time - self-seeded plants will flower in a wider range of colours than shown in the above photo.
