Malva sylvestris var.mauritiana / Tree Mallow / Seeds

An appealing shrub, whose purple flowers have interesting dark stripes.  Plants have heart shaped leaves and flowers over a long period in the summer from June to September.  Tree Mallows grow to a manageable height of 120-150cm and grow into upright branched shrubs.  They are drought tolerant and grow well in large containers.  The flowers attract pollinators.

Tree Mallow grows best in sun to part shade, well drained soil and some protection from wind.

Pack of 1g (approx 220) seeds.  Sow autumn or spring.  Early sowings flower in the first year.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy first year flowering semi-evergreen perennial (RHS Hardiness H5)
Flowers June to September
Height 120 - 150cm
Spread 60cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and well drained soil

Sow in autumn or spring about 2mm deep in trays of seed compost.  Keep at around 20C and germination takes 2-4 weeks, and can be erratic.   Pot on seedlings when they are big enough to handle and plant out in the garden when frost free. Trim back the plant on transplanting, to encourage a compact shape.  Early sowings flower in the first year.  Plant out in a sunny or semi-shaded area in not-too-rich soil.

Grow Plants need little maintenance once established.  They flower prolifically in the right conditions.  Cut back flowering stalks after they have died to stimulate more flowers.  In spring, tidy up any remaining unruly/dead material.  Mulch the base of the plants in colder gardens to protect them against hard frosts.
