Melissa officinalis / Lemon Balm / Herbal Tea & Culinary Herb / Seeds

A decorative herb with a bushy habit and oval lemon-scented leaves.  These are great plants for a herb garden, in containers and for edging an informal border. Plants grow to a height of about 60cm, with white or pale blue flowers appearing in summer.  This plant is mainly grown for its leaves, which make a tasty lemon-scented tea and are also used in cooking.  Leaves can be used fresh, or dried and stored for use in the winter. 

Lemon Balm grows best in a sunny to part shaded site and moist but well drained soil.  Plants attract pollinators into the garden.

Pack of approx 2000 seeds.  Sow from late winter into summer.  These seeds can be grown as micro-herbs.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Conditions  Sun to part shade and most well drained soil
Sow Sow the seeds in late winter into summer in a tray of moist seed compost.  Cover lightly with compost, keep at 20C and germination takes 1-2 weeks.  Transplant seedlings into pots when they are large enough to handle and plant out into the garden or containers after hardening off.  If growing as micro-herbs, harvest at the 4-leaf stage.
Grow Plants grow quickly during the summer when the leaves can be harvested as needed.  They die back in the winter, when they can be cleared up, and start growing again in spring.  Plants can be divided in spring or autumn.  In good conditions Lemon Balm spreads naturally and may need to be contained, by growing in pots or cutting back the flowers before they self-seed.
