Monarda didyma / Bergamot / Herb / Seeds

Beebalm are versatile plants, looking wonderful in herb and flower borders, and useful as a culinary and medicinal herb.  This mix has whorls of flowers on upright stems in shades of red and rose from June to September.  Plants grow to a height of 80-100cm and attract pollinators into the garden.

Monarda didyma grows best in part shade to full sun and moist well drained soil.  The scented leaves and flowers can be added to teas, cold drinks and salads.

Pack of 50 seeds.  Sow directly into cultivated soil in late spring or start earlier indoors.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy herbaceous perennial (RHS Hardiness H5)
Flowers June to September
Height 80 - 100cm
Spread 50 - 90cm
Conditions  Plant out in full sun and moist well-drained soil.
Sow

Sow these seeds in early spring to early summer.  Sow indoors into the surface of a tray of compost, cover very lightly with compost and do not exclude light, which helps germination.  Keep at around 20°C and germination takes 2-4 weeks, sometimes up to 6 weeks.   Transplant seedlings to pots when they are big enough to handle.  Plant out into the garden after the last frost about 30cm apart.  Pinch out the growing tips before planting out to encourage bushiness.  Or sow the seeds directly into cultivated soil in late spring.

Grow

Deadhead plants to encourage more flowers.  Cut back stems in the autumn after flowering has finished.  Plants die back in winter and start re-growing again in spring.  Mature plants can be divided in spring.
