Oenothera versicolor 'Sunset Boulevard' / Evening Primrose / Seeds

A lovely Evening Primrose with orange, fading to red, flowers all summer from June into early autumn.  Plants form a bushy mound of leaves in spring, growing to a height of 40-60cm, followed by scented flowers, which open all day.  They form good ground cover and look great in borders and alpine or gravel gardens.

Evening Primrose grows best in full sun to part shade and well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil.  Plants are drought tolerant once established and self-seed in good conditions.

Pack of 50 seeds.  Sow in spring/early summer.  Plants flower in the first year from seed sown by March.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy deciduous short-lived perennial (RHS Hardiness H5)
Flowers June to August
Height 40 - 60cm
Spread 40cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil.
Sow

Sow in spring on the surface of a tray of seed compost and press the seeds into the soil. Keep the tray at 20°C and germination takes 2-3 weeks.   Do not exclude light, which helps germination.  Transplant young seedlings into small pots and then outside into the ground or into containers, after hardening off.  Protect young plants from slugs.   Sow by March for 1st year flowers.

Grow

These are deciduous plants, dying down in the autumn after flowering and growing again in spring.  Plants need little attention once established, just cleaning up in winter after the plant dies down.  Stem cuttings can be done in early summer but plants often self-seed naturally.
