Oregano / Oreganum vulgare / Aromatic Culinary Herb / Seeds

Oregano is an aromatic and edible Mediterranean herb.  They grown into attractive compact plants, with soft hairy olive-green leaves and small white flowers in mid-summer.  Plants grow to a height of about 50cm.   They can be grown in pots and in the garden, making good edging plants.

Oregano grows best in sun to part shade and well-drained soil.  For cooking, the leaves can be used fresh or dried and are great for Greek and Italian dishes.

Pack of approx 3000 seeds.  Sow all year.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the seed packet.

Hardiness Hardy evergreen perennial herb
Flowers Mid-summer
Height 30 - 50cm
Spread 30 - 50cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and well drained not-too-rich soil
Sow For indoor cultivation: Sow year-round on the surface of moist seed compost in trays or pots.  Press the seeds gently into the compost.  Do not cover with compost, and keep at around 20°C. Germination takes 1-2 weeks.  Water sparingly and give the plants good light.   For outdoor cultivation: Sow in spring and early summer as above and plant out in rows 30cm apart.  Pinch out the tips of established seedlings to encourage a bushier habit.
Grow Harvest the leaves 2-4 times year by cutting the stems to about 5cm from the ground.  Cut off flowering stems to encourage the plant to produce more leaves.  Expect to replace plants every 4-5 years for the most aromatic leaves.  Use the leaves fresh or dried.
