Papaver orientale ‘Pizzicato’ / Dwarf Oriental Poppy / Seeds

Easy to grow dwarf variety of oriental poppy with a mix of large red, pink, white and orange flowers, coming out in spring to early summer.  These poppies are bred to stand on strong foliage with non-flop flowers.  Great for borders and cottage gardens, and also a good cut flower.  Grows to about 50cm in height.

Oriental poppies prefer a sunny spot and well drained soil.

Pack of 50 seeds.  Sow in spring or autumn indoors for planting out in the spring or summer. Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.  Plants flower in the first year if sown early.

Caution: All parts of plant except the seed are poisonous.

See how your seeds are packed.

Hardiness Hardy perennial (RHS Hardiness H7)
Flowers May to July
Height 50cm
Spread 30cm
Conditions  Full sun and well drained soil

Sow in spring or autumn.   Sow on the surface of a tray of seed compost and keep at 15 – 18°C.  Cover with a plastic bag or propagator lid until germination and do not exclude light. Germination takes 2 to 3 weeks. Transplant the seedlings to pots when they are big enough to handle, and plant out after the last frost. Overwinter autumn sowings in a cold frame or greenhouse and plant out in the spring.

Plants grow a rosette of leaves first and then flower in late spring.  Remove spent flowers by cutting the flower stalks back to the rosette of leaves.  After plants have finished flowering, cut the plants back to just above ground level and a new rosette of leaves will grow and you may get a few more flowers. Plants can be divided in spring. Root cuttings can be taken in late autumn/early winter.
