Penstemon hartwegii 'Tubular Bells Red' / Scarlet Beard Tongue / Seeds

Lovely long-flowering prairie plants with large red bells from late spring to the end of summer.  These look great in mass plantings, as well as in borders and bigger containers.  They make good cut flowers.  Plants are strong stemmed, growing to a height of 30-45cm.  They are self-cleaning, and do not need deadheading.


Penstemon ‘Tubular Bells’ prefers sun well drained soil. It is just hardy for the UK, and does better in sheltered positions.


Pack of 50 small seeds.  Sow in spring to late summer in trays of compost. Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Conditions  Full sun and well-drained soil in a sheltered position
Sow

Sow in spring to late summer on the surface of moist and well drained seed compost.  Do not cover the seeds as light is needed for germination.  Spray the seed tray with a garden fungicide to prevent damping off of young seedlings. Germination takes 1-2 weeks at 18-20°C.  Transplant seedlings into pots when they are big enough to handle and out into the garden after the last frost. Protect young plants from slugs and snails.  
Grow

Plants are only just hardy in the UK – plant in a sheltered well-drained position or protect over winter by mulching or lifting.  Cut back the plants in winter.  Plants are generally semi-evergreen, and will regrow again after cutting back.  Mature plants can be divided in spring and softwood cuttings can be taken in spring/early summer and semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
