Podalyria sericea / African Satin Bush or Silver Sweet Pea Bush / Seeds

(Code: SIL_058)
Podalyria sericea / African Satin Bush or Silver Sweet Pea Bush / Seeds

A beautiful shrub with silvery silky leaves and small pink flowers in winter.  This shrub has a naturally rounded shape and grows to a height of about 1m.  It is great for Mediterranean gardens, where the silvery leaves provide a contrast to other plants, and the scented flowers provide colour in the winter.

The African Satin Bush likes a sunny spot in well drained composted acidic sandy soil.  It does not do well in alkaline soils.  Keep well watered, as it grows naturally in damp spots in the Cape Floral Kingdom of South Africa.  Grow in warm gardens and protect against frost.

Pack of 10 seeds.  Sow in spring or autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Half hardy to tender evergreen shrub
Flowers Winter into spring
Height 60 - 100cm
Spread 50 - 100cm
Conditions  Full sun to part shade and well-drained composted neutral to acidic sandy soil
Sow Sow in spring or autumn.  Soak the seeds in warm water until it cools and then sow in a tray of seed compost, lightly covering with compost.  Keep at 15-20C and germination takes 2 to 3 weeks.  Transplant young seedlings into pots before they reach the four-leaf stage (to avoid root disturbance) then plant out after the last frost.

Grow in warm gardens and protect from hard frosts with a fleece jacket and/or mulching around the roots, or bring under cover in winter.  Plants can be grown in pots and kept in a conservatory over winter.  Plants are evergreen.  Trim lightly after flowering if necessary to maintain a good shape. Older woodier plants are more tolerant of colder weather.
