Scabiosa ochroleuca / Cream Pincushion / Seeds

A long flowering perennial with masses of soft cream pincushion flowers from June to September.  These plants grow elegant flowers on strong stems, making this an excellent border plant, cut flower and dried flower.  Plants grow to a height of about 75cm and attract lots of butterflies and bees into the garden.  Good for use in borders, wilder gardens and gravel gardens, and plants are drought tolerant once established.

Scabious grows well in full soil and well drained neutral to alkaline soils.  The plants generally die back in the winter, after flowering, and start growing again in spring.

Pack of 50 seeds.  Sow seeds in spring or autumn.  Sow by March for first year flowers.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Flowers June to September
Height 60 - 90cm
Spread 40 - 50cm
Conditions  Full sun and well-drained neutral to alkaline soil
Sow the seeds in spring or autumn.  Sow into a tray of moist seed compost, covering lightly with vermiculite or compost.  Keep at 18 - 21°C and germination takes 2-4 weeks and sometimes longer and can be erratic.  Sow by March for first year flowers.  If sowing in autumn, protect seedlings over winter in a cold-frame or greenhouse and plant out in spring.
Grow Deadhead plants down to the nearest bud to prolong flowering into autumn.   Clear dead material from the plants in winter, leaving the new green growth at ground level.  Mature plants forms clumps which can be divided every few years in spring to keep the plants in good shape. Basal and softwood cuttings can be taken in early summer.
