Scabious 'Beaujolais Bonnets' / Scabiosa atropurpurea / Seeds

An unusual burgundy coloured Scabious that grows in a nice neat clump of green foliage,with tall stems of pincushion flowers in June to September.   A lovely low maintenance plant for borders and containers, growing to a height of 50-60cm. Also a good cut flower.  Plants attract lots of butterflies. 


Scabious grows well in a range of soils, but prefers a rich well drained soil in a sunny place.

Conditions  Sun to part shade and well-drained soil
Sow Sow in spring to autumn.  Sow in a tray of moist seed compost, covering lightly with vermiculite or compost. Keep at 18-21°C and germination takes 1-6 weeks.  If sowing in autumn, protect seedlings overwinter in a cold-frame or greenhouse and plant out in spring.  
Grow Deadhead plants to prolong the flowering into autumn.   Clear dead material from the plants in winter, leaving the new green growth at ground level.  Mature plants forms clumps which can be divided every 3 to 4 years in spring to keep the plants in good shape.
