Sidalcea hybrida 'Party Girl' / Seeds

A good upright border plant related to Hollyhocks. Sidalcea ‘Party Girl’ has carmine pink satiny flowers of sturdy spikes up to 1m.  Plants flower from June to August - longer if dead headed.  The flower spikes make good cut flowers.

Sidalcea prefers full sun and will tolerate light shade. Well drained soil is best – avoid very wet soils.

Pack of 30 seeds.  Sow January/February for first year flowers. Or spring/summer for next year flowering.   Germination is best with some chilling, either outside in winter or in a fridge. Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy herbaceous perennial (RHS Hardiness H7)
Flowers June to August
Height 60-100cm
Spread 30-45cm
Conditions  Full sun to light shade and well-drained soil.
Sow Sow in January/February in a tray of moist seed compost to a depth of 3mm.  Keep in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse and seedlings emerge in the spring. Or sow in spring/summer – keep at room temperature and germination takes 3 to 4 weeks.  If germination is low, move the tray to a fridge for 4 weeks and back into the warmth and germination should improve.  Pot on and grow until the plants are ready to plant out after the last frost.  Some early sowings flower in the first year, the rest flower in the second year.   Protect young plants from slugs and snails.
Grow Deadhead plants to encourage more flowers.  Plants can be cut back hard after flowering, when more flowers may appear later in the year. Otherwise, clear up dead material in autumn or winter (the plants die back in winter, before growing again in spring).  Plants can be divided regularly (eg every 3 years) in the spring.
