Sideritis scardica / Greek Mountain Tea / Evergreen Herb / Seeds

Greek Mountain Tea is an attractive perennial herb.  It originates from the mountainous regions of Greece and surrounding areas and grows well in the UK in the right conditions. Plants have silver-grey woolly leaves and upright spikes of whorled yellow aromatic flowers in the summer, typically from June to August.

These are good garden plants with a long history of medicinal use as a herbal tea.  The fresh flowers with stems and leaves can be cut in early summer and dried and roughly chopped for brewing tea.

Greek Mountain Tea plants need to be grown in a sunny position in well drained poorer soil.  The plants are not suited to waterlogged conditions.  They grow well in containers.

Height 40 - 60cm
Spread 20 - 30cm

Sow

Sow the seeds indoors in winter to late spring onto the surface of a tray of fine compost. Cover very lightly with sieved compost or vermiculite as light is needed for germination.  Keep at 15-20 degrees Celsius and germination takes 2-4 weeks, sometimes erratically up to 3 months. Or sow in autumn in a greenhouse – allow the seeds to germinate naturally over winter in the greenhouse for transplanting in spring. Grow on seedlings in cooler conditions.  Avoid waterlogging.

Grow

Transplant seedlings into small pots and plant outside after hardening off.  Tidy up plants after flowering or in the spring in colder areas.  Stem cuttings take well in late spring.
