Stipa gigantea / Giant Feather Grass / Golden Oats / Seeds

Giant Feather Grass is a striking architectural ornamental grass, ideal for borders, prairie-style planting, gravel gardens and as a dramatic statement plant. Plants form a graceful mound of narrow green leaves, from which tall, airy flower stems rise in early summer, reaching up to 2.5m in height. The delicate oat-like flowers emerge green, maturing to golden straw tones that shimmer beautifully in sunlight and persist well into winter.

Stipa gigantea grows best in free-draining soils and thrives in dry, sunny positions once established. The foliage remains attractive for much of the year, with flower stems adding movement and interest from summer through winter.

Pack of 10 seeds.  Sow in autumn/winter outdoors and winter/spring indoors.  Germination is erratic so sow more than you need.  Sowing instructions and colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial grass (RHS Hardiness H6)
Flowers June to August
Height 180 - 250cm
Spread About 100cm
Conditions  Grow in full sun and well-drained soil. Tolerant of drought once established.
Sow

Sow outdoors in autumn and winter into a tray of compost and leave in a cold frame for natural stratification. Seeds germinate in spring. Or sow indoors in late winter to spring into a tray of compost. Cover with compost and keep at about 20°C. Germination takes 2–6 weeks. If there is no germination, move the tray into a fridge for 3–4 weeks before returning to warmth. Pot on seedlings and plant out after hardening off. .

Grow

Stipa gigantea is evergreen to semi-evergreen and requires minimal maintenance. Flower stems can be left standing through winter for structure and wildlife interest. In spring, remove old flower stems and dead foliage.  Mature plants can be divided in late spring.
