Stipa ichu / Peruvian Feather Grass / Seeds

A beautiful grass with narrow green leaves and graceful silver-white plumes of flowers in the summer from August to October.  Plants grow to a height of 80-100cm and are useful for borders, Mediterranean gardens and pots.  These grasses are great for bringing movement into the garden.  The flower plumes look good in the winter and can also be used for cut flower arrangements.

Peruvian Feather Grass grows best in full sun to part shade and well drained soils.  It is low maintenance and tolerates drought and exposed gardens once established.

Pack of approx 100 clean seeds (small seeds). Sow in early spring to midsummer. Germination can be erratic so sow more than you need. Sowing instructions and colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy deciduous or semi-evergreen perennial grass (RHS Hardiness H4)
Flowers August to October
Height 80 - 100m
Spread 20 - 50cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and well drained soil
Sow

Sow the seeds onto the surface of a tray of sieved or seed compost.   Press the seeds gently into the compost or cover the seeds very lightly with compost or vermiculite.  Keep at 15-20°C and seedlings emerge in 6-8 weeks and can be erratic.  Pot on and grow until the plants are ready to plant out after the last frost.  Protect autumn sowings over winter in a cold frame or greenhouse.

Grow

Plants generally die back in the winter after flowering, but may stay green in warmer gardens.  Clear away the dead material in early spring before the plant starts growing again in spring.  If plants have kept their green leaves overwinter then ‘comb through’ to remove any dead leaves.  Mature plants should be divided regularly every two to three years in winter or early spring.
