Sweet Pea ‘Spencer Air Warden’ / Lathyrus odoratus / Scented Climber / Seeds

A lovely red-flowered Spencer Sweet Pea, with scented wavy blooms on strong tall stems.  Plants climb to about 1.8m, producing lots of flowers on from June to August.  This makes an excellent cut flower.

Sweet Peas like full sun and fertile well drained soil.  Provide support for climbing plants.

Pack of 50 seeds.  Sow in autumn/winter in pots in a coldframe, for planting out in spring.  And/or sow in spring in pots or directly in the ground.    Autumn/winter sowings flower earlier than spring sowings.  Sow in both autumn and spring to prolong flowering.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy annual climber (RHS Hardiness H2)
Flowers June to August
Height Up to 1.8m
Spread Plant 3 seedlings per station to cover about 30-50cm
Conditions  Sun, fertile well-drained soil and plenty of water
Sow

Sow in autumn/winter in small pots of compost in a cold frame or greenhouse.  Sow 2 or 3 seeds per pot, about 1-2cm deep.  Seeds germinate in 1-3 weeks.  Pinch out the tips of seedlings once they are established (eg more than 10cm tall) to encourage bushier growth.  Plant out in spring.  Or sow in spring in small pots or directly in the ground.   Plant out pot-grown plants into the garden in a sunny spot.  Autumn/winter sowings flower earlier than spring sowings.

Grow Plants grow in spring, flower in summer and then die in late summer, when they can be removed. They can be grown in pots, but they need plenty of water to do well.  Fertilize pot grown plants regularly during flowering.  Provide support for plants, such as a trellis or wires, or encourage them to climb up through other tall plants.  You may need to tie-in plants as they climb.  Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering.  You will have fragrant cut flowers all summer.
