Tulbaghia violacea are attractive long-flowering plants. They have thin semi-evergreen leaves, and dainty umbels of lavender-coloured flowers, sitting on tall stalks, from June to September. Plants grow to a height of 30-50cm and look good in groups in the front of a border or in pots or a rockery. The leaves and flowers smell of garlic when crushed.
Tulbaghias grow best in full sun and well-drained soil. They will tolerate part shade and drought. The plants can be left in the soil outside in the winter in warmer, sheltered locations, otherwise grow in pots and keep in a greenhouse over winter to protect from hard frosts.
