Veronica spicata 'Blue' / Spiked Speedwell / Seeds

Spiked Speedwells are great border plants.  They grow toothed hairy leaves and attractive spikes of blue star-shaped flowers in the summer, from June to August/September.  Plants grow to a height of about 40cm, and the flowers attract pollinators into the garden.  They are good cut flowers.

Veronica grows best in sun to part shade and well-drained soil.  Plants look good in borders and gravel gardens, and also grow well in containers.

Pack of approx 2000 seeds.  Sow the seeds in spring and summer in a tray of compost.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy deciduous perennial (RHS Hardiness H4)
Flowers June to August/September
Height 30 - 50cm
Spread 30cm
Conditions  Full sun to part shade and well-drained soil
Sow Sow the seeds in spring and summer on the surface of moist compost.  Cover very lightly with compost and do not exclude light, which helps germination.  Keep the tray at 15-20°C and germination takes about 2-3 weeks, sometimes a little longer. Transplant seedlings into small pots when they are big enough to handle.  Plant out into the garden after hardening off.  Pinch out the growing tips on transplanting into the garden for a bushier plant.
Grow Deadhead the plants to encourage more flowers.  Plants die back in winter when they can be cleared up and start re-growing in spring.  Mature clumps can be divided in spring or autumn.
